Dominican Olympic leader praises development of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, April 14, 2010 – The President of Dominican Republic Olympic Committee had encouraging words for all the FIVB Executive Committee and Board of Administration members while commending the increase of volleyball popularity around the world and its current placement in the Olympic program.

Luis Mejia Oviedo took part in the official opening ceremony of the two FIVB bodies and had the chance to address the audience.

“Volleyball and Beach Volleyball were two of the most followed disciplines during the last two editions of the Olympics in Athens and Beijing,” said Mejia Oviedo. “Today I can say that volleyball has a place among the top three sports in the Olympics.”

“It has been a long way since the sport first was accepted as an Olympic sport in 1964 but you are the people responsible of that advance,” he said. “You have worked very hard to accomplish those achievements, with the appropriate change of the rules and all the efforts made to disseminate the seed of volleyball.”

Mejía Oviedo also had words of praise for the FIVB Development Center in the Dominican Republic saying it is a good example of developing the sport through education.

In the opening ceremony Mejía was joined by the Minister of Sports & Recreation of Dominican Republic, Mr. Felipe Payano, and the President of the Dominican Volleyball Confederation, Mr. Ramón García.
